5 tips for selecting people to serve as your references
References are so important in a job search. While they may seem like an afterthought, since they are often called close to when an offer is made, it’s important that you prioritize them.
But how do you select the right people to serve as your references? Below are 5 tips for choosing references that will help you land your next job.
References should be individuals who know your work and your potential. You want them to have witnessed your strengths in a professional environment, and observed your growth.
Choose people who are invested in your career and in you getting to the next right job. You want to choose individuals who are on your team, rooting for you from the sidelines, and genuinely interested in your success.
Select a combination of individuals. You want to choose at least one person who has supervised you, or is more senior to you. You can also select someone who is at your level and can speak to what it is like to work alongside you. Finally, if you are a manager, you may consider having someone who has reported to you serve as a reference as she can speak to your strengths as a supervisor.
Consider selecting someone with a fancy title or from a known company. Seniority can mean something in this process. However, if your colleague with a big name doesn’t really know your work, you may be better off selecting someone without a big name, but with much more meaningful information to provide in a reference check.
References should be available and willing to take the time to be thoughtful in their responses about you. If you have someone in mind, but she is notoriously too busy to answer the phone, she may prolong your hire process.
