Unless you wear a uniform to work, dress codes are one of those policies that provide parameters but are not an exact science. They often lack specifics, instead using vague terms like “appropriate” and “best judgment.”
It’s important to develop a solid judgment about what is and is not appropriate for your workplace. Remember, dress codes are not about what looks good on you or not. Additionally, they’re not in response to your individual style. Simply put, they are just limits set for employees in order to further the company’s image, reputation and mission. Be you, but within those limits.
So, if you’re wondering if something is work appropriate, chances are it’s not worth the risk if it isn’t. Why risk having that talk with HR when you can just change into something that doesn’t make you unsure of yourself? If you have an awesome fashion sense make sure you find opportunities outside of work to rock that part of your wardrobe. If you have opportunities to wear your neon leggings outside of work, it won’t be so difficult to pass them over on Monday morning.
