3 things references should say when asked the weakness question + A FREE Worksheet
Being a reference can be a pretty simple way to help a colleague get ahead in her career. However, there is always that dreaded question about the candidate’s weakness. As someone who has conducted dozens of reference checks, I’ve compiled 3 simple recommendations for what to say when you get asked that weakness question. If you’re still looking for more material on the subject, check out my worksheet on this with a sneak peek below.
Be honest. Share a weakness that the candidate struggled with. However, choose one on which the candidate demonstrated improvement while working with you.
Emphasize how the candidate has grown, sharing how they became aware of their weakness, the steps they took to overcome it, and the new skill set they developed in the process.
To really drive home how humble this candidate is, discuss their overall ability to respond positively to constructive criticism, and their ability to grow with feedback.
