3 ways to save the day when you forget your business cards

I have a secret. I don’t have business cards. At first, I didn’t have business cards because I was debating designs and language, and just generally procrastinating. But overtime, without business cards, something interesting started happening. Whenever I’d meet someone and she’d ask to exchange business cards, one of the following outcomes would occur.

  1. I’d take her business card and let her know I would reach out to her. This way, the next step for solidifying our relationship was clear to both of us—and I was in control of it happening.

  2. If she also didn’t have a business card (and this happens quite often), I’d take out my phone, open a new email, ask her for her email address and send her an immediate email. The subject would be something quick and easy, like “Follow up from X event.” In the body, I’d write something like, “Great to meet you! Let’s keep in touch!” In my email signature would be my website and any other pertinent information by which I want her to remember me.

  3. Whether or not she has a business card, I would offer to connect with her immediately on Linkedin (or whatever social media platform was relevant). If you send a personal note with your request to connect, the conversation can continue easily when she goes to accept your request the next day.

So now I’m undecided if I will actually—eventually—get these business cards. I’m not so convinced that I need them as these alternatives for more immediate and lasting follow up are working so well. What do you think?
