A better way to ask for the salary you want

When you are giving your ideal salary, regardless of if it is before or after the other person shares her offer, I’ve learned from career coach Ashley Stahl that it’s best to frame your demand by saying,

“I’m being considered for positions in the $65k-$80k range.” Or whatever your range is.

This phrasing is good for your cause in 3 ways:

1. It takes the onus off of you to say, “I’m worth $65k-$80k” which is helpful if you’re feeling uncomfortable touting your value.

2. It makes it seem like other recruiters are valuing you at that level—this doesn't mean you have to have received offers in this range, just that you're eligible for jobs in that range!

3. Thinking that your value has been assessed by other recruiters will resonate with the recruiter you’re talking to.
